The name on our storefront comes from our father, grandfather, and founder, Wei Mah. The man who built this business from one small shop to two locations, three generations, and now. shipping across the world. To understand what Wei's Western Wear has become, you have to know the man who started it all.
Wei Mah didn’t come from money. He came from a small village in rural China, where survival meant showing up and doing your part. The second of seven children born during the Great Depression, he learned early that nothing came easy.
In 1949, when war and political upheaval closed off opportunity, his family made a choice that would change the course of all of their lives. They gathered what little they had to send one child across the world — just one — to build a better life. They chose Wei.
He arrived in Canada with little English, no family, and no plan except to find work. He started where he could: doing repairs, mending what others might have thrown away. That skill, and that pride in doing things right, became the foundation of everything that came next.
In time, he opened a small repair shop in Red Deer. Just him, his tools, and long hours at the bench. But word spread. People noticed his craftsmanship. They noticed that if Wei said something would be done, it was done.
For years, Wei worked alone, saving every dollar he could. When he finally had enough, he sent for his wife, Moon, who had been waiting half a world away. She joined him in Canada, and together they started a family, building a life that would shape generations to come.
From his workbench, a legacy grew. Boots became jeans. Jeans became jackets. Repairs became retail. And through it all, Wei kept the same philosophy: quality first, promises kept, no shortcuts.
Three generations later, that same spirit still runs the store. You can see it in the family who still shows up every morning. You can feel it in the way customers are greeted by name. You can hear it in the sound of boots on the old wooden floor.
Wei Mah wasn’t just a founder. He was a craftsman, an entrepreneur, a father, a grandfather, and a man who believed that hard work could build not just a business, but a better life.
From one man’s promise to a family tradition, Wei’s Western Wear stands as a testament to his belief that if you put in the work, the rest will follow.
