Spring into the Saddle: Prepare Your Tack for the Season!

Spring into the Saddle: Prepare Your Tack for the Season!

Spring has sprung, and the itch to get back in the saddle is strong! But before you excitedly reunite with your equine companion, take a moment to properly care for your tack. After all, well-maintained tack is not only a joy to use, but it's also an investment that can last a lifetime.

Giving Your Tack a Spring Cleaning

  1. Disassemble and Clean: Start by taking apart your tack as much as possible. Wipe everything down with a damp sponge to remove dirt and grime.
  2. Clean the Leather: Wipe everything with a damp sponge. Then, apply a leather cleaner or saddle soap, but be mindful of the color! Some products can darken the leather. Wipe thoroughly with a clean, damp cloth, gently scrubbing as needed.  Important: If you have suede, never use saddle soap or oil. Use a suede-specific cleaner for proper care. If the suede is smooth, a suede brush can help restore its nap.
  3. Drying and Conditioning: Allow the leather to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight. Once dry, apply a leather conditioner to keep it supple.

Recommended Products

Lexol: Offers excellent cleaning and conditioning options for saddles and tack.

Bickmore: Provides a variety of products that won't darken leather.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Steer clear of wipes or products containing alcohol, as these can dry out the leather.

Safety First: Inspecting Your Tack

While cleaning, prioritize safety by inspecting your tack for any signs of wear and tear.  Replace immediately any leather components that show cracks, weakness, or excessive stretching in the holes. Check for rusting, loose screws, or bent hardware. This is also a perfect opportunity to tighten any chicago screws – a handy tip is to use clear nail polish to secure them in place!

Pay close attention to high-wear areas like bridle connections (bit and reins) and cinch attachments (latigo). These are common points of failure and are often easy to replace. If needed, we offer a wide selection of replacement hardware, cinches, and latigo straps to keep your tack safe and reliable.

Ready to Ride!

By following these simple steps, you can ensure your tack is in top condition and ready for your first spring ride. Remember, a well-maintained saddle and other equipment not only provide comfort for you but also promote your horse's well-being. Now go forth and enjoy the beautiful spring weather – happy riding!
