FAQ's
FAQ'S
What is the best Flame Resistant rated clothing?
IFR and Action West are Canadian companies that have specialized in FR and PPE clothing for decades. Wei's carries IFR, Action West, Carhartt and Pioneer brands in selected FR styles. Increased demand for PPE and safety clothing has attracted well-known work wear brands like Carhartt, Ariat and Wrangler who now offer several styles of FR clothing, from bib overalls to hoodies, pants and plain or patterned shirts. Safety regulations have improved over the years, resulting in more requirements for specific types of Flame Resistant clothing, which must meet inspection and testing standards. What is Flame-Resistant Treated Clothing?
Yes. The label will give you an idea of how many washes your treated FR clothing can withstand before you need to replace it to ensure your safety code compliance. Cotton is a good insulator against heat and a poor conductor of electricity, and often used in FR clothing – but it will catch fire when exposed to direct flame. Some FR manufacturers might use treated cotton clothing instead of inherently fire-resistant fibres or fabrics. The problem with treated clothing is the chemical treatment will wear off after several washes. Your protection lessens or disappears, and you are not fully protected as the jobsite requires. In Canada, this deterioration of FR protection must be stated on the label - for example, 'replace after 20 washes'.
What Are Inherently Flame-Resistant Materials?
For better protection, buy better FR clothing using materials that are inherently fire resistant. FR materials such as Nomex or Kevlar are designed at the molecular level to inhibit electricity, arc flashes and heat. These materials are inherently fire-resistant and resist catching fire when exposed to extreme heat and combustion. They are available in fibres or fabrics to clothing manufacturers who use them to make the industry-standard flame resistant clothes.
Are any Materials More Dangerous Near an Open Flame?
Synthetic fibres such as nylon, polyester, acetate or rayon, when heated, could melt onto your skin, therefore FR clothing is never made with 100% of these synthetic materials, but blends, for example with a higher percentage of cotton and a lower percentage of polyester, are common. Cotton is not a good conductor of electricity or flame. Cotton may be blended with polyester as well as a specialized FR material to provide durability as well as protection.
What types of workers need FR clothing?
While some of our fire-fighting heroes absolutely need FR clothing, there are many other professions that use and can benefit from FR clothing and workwear. Workers in fire service, utilities, oil and gas, research labs, welders, drillers, and many other professionals use FR clothing. Flame-resistant clothing is designed to protect the wearer from burns and help prevent the spread of flames, which means it’s a useful tool in a hazardous or potentially dangerous job. It resists ignition and self extinguishes, which is particularly helpful in jobs that are exposed to explosions, fires and thermal incidents.
What is the difference between “Flame-Resistant” and “Flame-Retardant”?
FR clothing can be broken down into two groups: flame-resistant and flame-retardant. The differences between the two are subtle, but they are both excellent options for those with potentially hazardous work. Flame-resistant clothing is made from fabrics that are resistant to flames and embers, which allows them to naturally self extinguish. Flame-retardant clothing, on the other hand, has been chemically treated to be self extinguishing. Both are safe and effective, and will help protect you from fire and heat-related injuries, but they’re made from different materials. It’s tough to tell the two types of FR clothing apart unless you check the tags.
Can you simplify FR clothing ratings?
FR clothing ratings are a guide to help you know how many layers of FR clothing you should wear to protect yourself, depending on the hazard risk level. HRC1 is low risk, which means you can wear just one layer of FR clothing (such as FR shirt and pants, or just FR coveralls). This increases in risk up to HRC4, which means you should wear three or more layers of FR clothing to be protected, such as cotton underwear, FR shirt and pants, plus a multilayer FR flash suit. These ratings are designed to help you determine the risk involved in a particular task and the amount of FR clothing you should wear as a result.
How Does Fire-Resistant Clothing Protect Against Flames and Heat?
In industries where workers are exposed to flames and heat, safety is paramount. Fire-resistant (FR) clothing stands as a crucial line of defense against these risks, offering protection against death and serious injury. At Wei's Western Wear, we understand the importance of safety. Join us as we delve into how FR clothing works and how it can protect you.
Fire-resistant clothing is created using materials designed to resist ignition, burning, and melting when exposed to heat. Understanding the science behind FR clothing is essential. FR materials are naturally resistant to flames without the need for chemical treatments. When exposed to flames, FR materials will self-extinguish, preventing the garment from burning once the ignition source is removed. Finally, FR clothing acts as an insulating barrier, shielding the wearer's skin from heat.
To provide comprehensive protection, FR clothing incorporates several essential elements:
- FR Fabrics: The primary component is the fabric itself, which is engineered to withstand flames and thermal hazards. Common FR materials include aramids (such as Nomex and Kevlar), modacrylics, and inherently FR cotton.
- Thread: FR clothing uses flame-resistant thread to ensure the entire garment is protected.
- Zippers and Closures: FR zippers and closures are crucial to prevent potential points of entry for flames or heat. These components are carefully selected to meet FR standards.
- Labels and Reflective Materials: FR clothing often includes labels and reflective materials to identify its FR properties and ensure visibility in low-light conditions.
FR clothing provides protection against flames in several ways. For example, FR materials create a char layer when exposed to flames. This layer insulates the fabric underneath, preventing further damage. FR clothing is also designed to shield wearers from extreme heat and molten metal splashes. FR fabrics have insulating properties that help protect against extreme heat, minimizing the transfer of heat to the wearer's skin. In industries where molten metal is present, FR clothing resists the penetration of molten metal splashes, preventing burns and injuries.
To ensure the effectiveness of FR clothing, it must meet stringent industry standards and certifications, including NFPA 2112, NFPA 70E, and ASTM F1506. FR clothing is designed to maintain its protective properties over time. Manufacturers conduct rigorous testing to ensure its longevity. FR clothing is subjected to numerous wash and wear cycles to ensure it retains its flame-resistant properties. Manufacturers provide specific instructions to maintain the integrity of FR clothing, including guidelines for washing and drying.
A proper fit is crucial for FR clothing. Ill-fitting garments may leave gaps where flames or heat can enter. FR clothing should be neither too loose nor too tight, allowing for ease of movement while maintaining a snug fit.
Investing in FR clothing offers numerous benefits:
- Enhanced Safety: The primary benefit is enhanced safety for workers in industries with fire and thermal hazards.
- Compliance: It ensures compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Reduced Injury Risk: FR clothing reduces the risk of burn injuries, protecting workers' lives and well-being.
- Longevity: High-quality FR clothing is durable and long-lasting, providing cost-effective protection.
In conclusion, fire-resistant (FR) clothing is a crucial safety tool in industries where workers are exposed to flames, heat, or thermal hazards. Understanding the science behind FR clothing and its key components is essential. Compliance with industry standards ensures that FR clothing meets rigorous safety requirements. A proper fit, care, and maintenance are critical for the continued effectiveness of FR garments. How Often Should I Inspect My FR Clothing? How Often Should I Replace My FR Clothing, and What Are the Signs of Wear and Tear?
Fire-resistant (FR) clothing is a critical element in industries where workers are exposed to flames, heat, or thermal hazards. However, to maintain the effectiveness of FR clothing, regular inspections and replacements are essential. At Wei's Western Wear, we prioritize your safety. We can help you understand how to inspect and replace your FR clothing, as well as how to detect the signs of wear and tear.
Inspecting your FR clothing on a regular basis is crucial to ensure it remains in optimal condition. The frequency of inspections depends on the frequency of use, work conditions, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
To maintain the integrity of your FR clothing, consider the following inspection schedule:

- Significant Wear: If the wear and tear is extensive, and you notice tears, frays, or loss of FR properties, it's advisable to replace the garment.
- Industry Standards: Follow industry-specific standards and regulations when replacing clothing.
- Manufacturer's Recommendations: Always consider the manufacturer's recommendations for the service life of your FR clothing. They may provide guidelines on when to replace the clothing.
To extend the lifespan of your FR clothing and ensure continued protection, you need to follow certain guidelines. Follow the manufacturer's washing instructions carefully. Use mild detergents, avoid bleach, and wash in cold or lukewarm water. In addition, use low heat or air drying to prevent excessive shrinkage or damage to the fabric. Finally, store your FR clothing in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing it in humid or damp conditions.
